Gergeti Trinity Church

  • Gergeti Trinity Church

Georgia has many places of interest that will pleasantly amaze and surprise its tourists. Except for its wine and other sightseeing, it is one of those countries that can be proud of its religious people and shrines of saints.

The Gergeti Trinity Church is a popular Orthodox and Apostolic Church in Georgia. It lies near the village Gergeti, the town of Stephantsminda. It is also called the Holy Trinity Church and sits on the top of a mountain at an elevation of 2170 meters. It is near one of the most beautiful peaks of Caucasus, Mount Kazbegi. It was built in the 14th century and is of 3 hours' steep climb and half an hours' drive in a taxi.

It should be mentioned that the Holy Trinity Church is the only one built in cross-cupola style in Khevi province. During the invasions of Tbilisi Persians in the 18th century, Saint Nino's Cross and the precious relics from Mtskheta were brought here for safekeeping.

Although in Soviet-era the religious services were prohibited in the church, it remained a well-known tourist destination and didn't suffer a lot. Nowadays it actively operates and makes services as a Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church.
